“My Life in Kampala So Far”

Location: Kampala, Uganda

It was my Day 2 in Kampala, the capital of Uganda, today! Thanks to the help of my Ugandan friend whom I met in the DDR course in Stockholm, Sweden, last year, everything has been on the right track so far! For instance, I know how things do not work as planned in this side of the world. When it comes to dealing with bureaucracy, it is nightmare in any countries, including Japan, but it has a tendency to be worse in developing countries. BUT to my surprise, on my second day in this country, I have already met an Assistance Inspector General of Police and he already authorized my research with the Uganda Police Force! YEY!!! One ticked off my list.

Kampala is such an energetic city with rapid development here and there! So, it’s known for traffic jam—just like in Kabul. The difference for me is, though, here I can ‘(semi-)officially’ take whatever public transport as long as I feel safe, while in Kabul, I was supposed to travel in an armed vehicle at all times and had to report my whereabouts via radio at the end of the day. I kinda miss my call signs, Kilo Delta 9.* with the first organization and Kilo Echo *.*.3 with the later organization. Haha Anyway, I have been enjoying moving around the city with Boda Boda-s! I know they can be dangerous since not all riders are trustable and may not drive safe, but this is the most convenient way to travel within the city when there is traffic jam.

I wanna keep this post short since I have a plan to visit the Kampala Metropolitan Police Station in the center tomorrow. The official kick-off of my research! Please pray that I will not be put behind bars by them while doing my research. :P

“私のカンパラ・ライフ”

場所：カンパラ、ウガンダ

今日が、ウガンダの首都カンパラでの二日目だった。去年行ったスウェーデンのストックホルムの武装解除の研修で友達になったウガンダ人の友達の助けのおかげで、今のところすべてが順調！こういう国では、物事が計画通りにいかないのが普通。お役所に関わることときたら、日本とかの先進国でもひどいくらいだから、発展途上国になるともっとひどいことが多い。でも、驚いたことに、ウガンダ２日目にして、すでにウガンダ警察のトップ２の階級の人に挨拶をして、ウガンダ警察についての調査の許可をもらった！やった～～！！！しなきゃいけないことリストから、一つクリア。

カンパラは、あっちこっちで今開発が行われてる、すっごいエネルギーにあふれた都市。だから、当然交通渋滞がすごい — カブールも一緒だけど。私にとっての違いは、この国では自分が大丈夫と思う限り、どんな交通機関を使ってもいいし、歩いてもいい。その反対に、カブールではいつも防弾車での移動を強いられてたし、一日の終わりに居場所について毎日スタッフ安全管理課にレポートしなきゃいけなかった。そんとき使ってた、私のコールサイン、最初の組織では、Kilo Delta 9.* と二番目の組織では、Kilo Echo *.*.3 がちょっと恋しいかも。笑　ということで、カンパラではバイクという交通手段を使って、移動するのを楽しんでるとこ！もちろん、このバイク運転手たちは必ずしもいい人じゃないし、運転が荒い可能性も大ってわかってるけど、これが交通渋滞に悩むカンパラを移動するのに一番快適（！？）な移動方法。

この記事は短めにしときたい。明日は、カンパラ中央警察署に行く予定だから。私の実地調査の本格始動！調査中に拘留されるようなことがないように祈っててくださいな！:P
