“Harry Potter Trip!??”

Location: Durham, UK

Durham where I currently live and will be living for the coming 3 years is a very historical town. The Durham Cathedral, which is a symbol of Durham along with the Castle, is 920 years old this year. I have visited the Cathedral many times already, but this is definitely my favorite place in Durham. It’s just so beautiful and mystical.

Apparently, some scenes of Harry Potter movies were shot in that Cathedral. It took me a while to figure out which part of the Cathedral the shooting took place, but now I know for sure! It is an annex part of the Cathedral which appears as a corridor and a patio in the Harry Potter movies. J

By chance, I had opportunities to visit Edinburgh, the capital of Scotland, TWICE in a row this month. My first visit was taken care of by my good friend who has lived there for a few years before moving to Bradford. She just finished her internship with a Belfast-based organization specialized in building dialogues in the divided community in Northern Ireland. She was stopping over at Edinburgh before taking off to her home, Denmark.

Such a meat x meat brunch!

I took a train at Durham at 07:24 AM on that day, which means I woke up around 06:00, and of course I passed out as soon as (literally!) the train left for the Durham station. LOL When I woke up, I realized that I’ve missed all the beautiful sceneries on the coast side and had to get off because the train was already at Edinburgh.

Because I had this fantastic private guide, I didn’t have to do any research prior to the trip (Thank you, S!!!!!) and just followed her to visit famous spots in the town. J But our first destination was a restaurant, of course. hehe

My second visit was with my Dutch friend who has known me since I was studying in Holland back in 2007. She followed me after I finished my exchange program at Tilburg (lol) and she then came to study at APU. We’ve been friends since then. J

During my both visits to Edinburgh, I found this city so pretty. Hard to describe why but I just loved it so much! I definitely like Edinburgh more than London or other cities that I have visited so far in the UK.

The author of Harry Potter series wrote the story in Edinburgh. I had lunch at the café, called the Elephant House, where she developed all sorts of ideas of the best-selling book in the world. From the window, you can see a cemetery and backside of houses with chimneys. There I could somehow see how J.K. Rowling came up with those stories in Harry Potter. I usually don’t feel like staying inside any cemetery for a long time, but this one was somewhat different and I even took some photos there. Again, I cannot explain why though.

Many friends of mine always make fun of me, saying that I live in the most northern tip of England though I have been complaining about cold weather since I came to the UK and I was planning to live somewhere warmer after Bradford. But I started discovering so many nice things about Durham and even more northern areas of this country. Oh well, I should like it here to survive the coming 3 years! Otherwise, I will not be able to obtain my doctoral degree! NOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!

“ハリーポッターの旅！？！”

私が今住んでる＆これから３年間を過ごす予定のダラム市はとっても歴史のある町。ダラム城と並んで町のシンボルであるダラム大聖堂はなんと今年で９２０歳！もう何度もこの大聖堂は訪れたけど、一度も飽きたことがない、私にとってダラムの中で一番好きな場所。本当にきれいで、とってもミステリアスな雰囲気があるところ。

最近まで知らなかったんだけど、この大聖堂の中でハリーポッターの映画のいくつかのシーンが撮影されたんだって。大聖堂のどこの部分が使われたのかを見つけるのに苦労したけど、やっとわかった！大聖堂に付随する建物で、映画では廊下と中庭として登場したところ。J

偶然今月はスコットランドの首都エディンバラを２度も訪れる機会があった。第1の訪問はブラッドフォードに来る前に数年間そこに住んでた友達が案内してくれた。彼女は北アイルランドの分断されたコミュニティーにおいて対話を設けようとするベルファースト市にある団体でインターンシップを終えたばかり。母国であるデンマークに帰る前にエディンバラでちょっとストップ・オーバーしてたところだった。

その日私は朝の７時２４分の電車にダラムから乗った。＝6時起きで、私は電車がダラム駅を出た瞬間（文字通り！）眠りこけた。笑　んで、目が覚めると、海岸線のどうやらキレイな風景を全部見逃したらしいことに気が付き、さらにいつの間にかもうエディンバラに着いてたから、すぐに降りなきゃいけなかった

私はラッキーなことに素敵なガイドがいたから、事前にな～んにもエディンバラについてリサーチせずに行った（本当にありがとう、S!!!!!）。んで、着くなり、ずっと彼女の後ろについていって、街で有名なところをどんどんまわっていった。J　でも、もちろん最初の行き先はレストランだった。笑

二度目の旅は、私が２００７年にオランダで勉強してた時から私を知ってるオランダ人の友達と。私のティルブルグでの交換留学が終わったあとも、私の後を追っかけてきて（笑）今度は彼女がＡＰＵに来た。それ以来ずっと友達。J

私の両方のエディンバラの旅で、本当に街がかわいいと思った。理由は上手く説明できないんだけど、すっごく好きだった！ロンドンとか他の今までイギリスで行ったどこよりもエディンバラが好きになった！

ハリーポッターの著者はエディンバラで物語を描いた。「象の家」っていうカフェで著者は世界中でベストセラーになった本のいろんなアイディアを練ったらしんだけど、そのお店でランチをした。そこの窓からは、お墓がいっぱいとかわいい煙突が付き出てるおうちの裏側が見える。そこでＪ．Ｋ．ローリングがハリーポッターの物語を練ったかがなんとなく想像できた。あんまりお墓とかにいるのは好きじゃないんだけど、このお墓は何かが違ってしばらくそこにいて、写真を何枚か撮ったくらい。なんでかは例によってわからないけど。

私の友達は、私がイギリスに来て以来ずっと寒さに対して文句を言い続けてる＆ブラッドフォードの後はもっと暖かいところに住むって宣言していたにもかかわらず、こんなイングランドの北端に住むことになったことをよくバカにする。笑　でも徐々にダラムとかさらに北の地にある地域の素敵さを発見し始めた気がする。まあ、そうじゃないとこれから３年間住む予定だから、困る！じゃないと、博士号をもらえない！それはダメ！！！！！！L
