“My Nail Artist, M!!”

Location: St. John’s Wood, London, UK

I was homeless in the UK from the end of September until mid-October for multiple reasons. :S And my friend from the high school who live in London, M, saved me from sleeping in the street together with another friend whom I’ve known also from Fukuoka, J.

I went to the same junior high & senior high school in Fukuoka with M for 6 years. Since we met each other at 8^th or 9^th grade for the first time, we have studied in the same class until our graduation. She definitely was and still is one of the smartest and hard-working people that I know. J

Now she works at an office of one of the most famous Japanese companies in central London. She goes to her office as early as 06:30 sometimes and stays there until 20:00 or so every day! Seriously, hat off to her!

Though she is such a busy woman, I like the fact that she keeps herself feminine for example by doing nails. Not ordinary acrylic pedicure; she does gel pedicure which lasts for 2-3 weeks. You gotta have artistic talent to design in addition to the ability to concentrate on tiny little details for hours, which she both has.

She has done my nails twice so far. So, here are some photos of her masterpieces!

I must tell you that she really is good at it! She attended a couple of classes and she can do nails almost like a professional! Knowing her from our school time, I know she has been researching it a lot to improve her skills and it is true that every time, she does my nails, I can see the improvement! Another hat off!

In Europe, there are many Asian women who open nail salons. I myself have tried two places in the UK (+ once by a Southeast Asian woman in Dubai and once in Japan – the place in Japan was great but super expensive!); one in Manchester and the other in Bradford. But both times, I wasn’t 100% happy. The shape of my nails wasn’t symmetric or the design wasn’t cute at all or didn’t / couldn’t paint as I said and they hurt me when reshaping my nails.

I am NOT being patriotic, BUT I think this type of detail-oriented work and client-centered service are what the Japanese are best at. Of course, I know that not all the Japanese are gifted with those skills but many of us have been trained to be so since we are small by practicing origami in school or calligraphy, or by being taught by mothers to care for others, etc.

So, thank you SO MUCH, M, for saving me from the street and taking care of my nails! You reminded me of the importance of staying feminine no matter how busy I am. And have a great weekend in Germany next week! J

“私のネールアーティスト！！”

場所：セイント・ジョンズ・ウッド、ロンドン、イギリス

諸事情により、９月末から１０月中旬にかけて、私ホームレスになっておりました。:S んで、高校時代の友達で今ロンドンに住んでる、M が私を道端で寝るような状況にならないようにしてくれたの！これまた福岡から知ってる友達、J も！

私は、M と福岡にある同じ中学と高校に合わせて６年間通った。中２か３のときに、初めて出会ってから卒業するまで同じクラスで勉強した。彼女は私が知ってる中で、ピカ一の頭がよくて、努力を怠らない人の一人だった＆これは現在進行形。

今彼女はロンドンの中心街にある、日本の大企業のロンドンオフィスで働いてる。早い時は６時半に出勤して、帰宅は毎日２０時すぎ！マジ、尊敬！

というように、彼女は殺人的に忙しいにも関わらず、爪をしたりして、女性らしさを忘れてないところがステキだと思う。彼女がするのは、普通のマニキュアじゃなくて、２－３週間はもつ、ジェル。ジェルを出来るようになるには、細かい作業に何時間も集中する力とデザインする芸術のセンスが必要。彼女は、両方とも持ち合わせてる。

本当に彼女は上手！何回か教室に通っただけで、ほぼプロのように出来るんだもん！中学の時から彼女を知ってるから、M は自分のスキルを上達させるためにいっぱいリサーチしてるに違いないと思う。実際毎回彼女が上達していってるのがわかる！またもや、尊敬！

ヨーロッパでは、アジア系の女性がよくネールサロンをやってる。私もイギリスで２か所でやってもらった（そして一度はドバイで東南アジアの女性に、んでもう一度は日本で - めっちゃよかったけど、めっちゃ高かった！）；一回はマンチェスターで、また別の時はブラッドフォードで。両方とも１００％満足いかなかった。爪の形が左右対称じゃなかったり、デザインがかわいくなかったり、なぜか頼んだように出来なかったり、爪の形を整えてる間に痛かったり。

別に自分の国をほめるわけじゃないけど、こんな風な緻密な作業＆お客さんを大事にするサービスは日本人がすごく得意とするとこだと思う。もちろんすべての日本人がこういう技術を持ってるわけじゃないけど、私たちは小さいころから折り紙をしたり、書道をしたりして細かい作業をやってきたり、母親から他人の気持ちを考えたり、配慮するように教えられるからかも。

ということで、M 道端から私を救ってくれ、そして私の爪をしてくれてありがとう！どんなときでも、女性らしさを保つ大切さを教えてもらいました。ほいじゃ、(来週の話だけど)ドイツでの週末を楽しんで！J
