“The
End of My Last Semester at Bradford”
Location: Bradford, West Yorkshire,
UK
Time flies! OMG! My last semester at
Bradford came to an end! I feel that it was just yesterday that I started the
second semester…
April 30th was the
deadline of assignments. I handed in all my assignments by the deadline. I was
so surprised to know that A LOT of MA students of my Department, including some
native speakers of English (!!), were given an extension of two weeks to submit
their work WITHOUT any legitimate reasons (at least, in my view).
As far as I know, there was one student who lost his mother some weeks before the deadline. I would say his reason is totally understandable. But others’ reasons seemed to me that they were just ‘excuses’ and demonstrated their lack of academic integrity and time management skills. I know some of them were in fact spending their time on playing musical instruments (for performance in class) or preparing a presentation for extracurricular activities, instead of doing their ‘duty’ as a student to finish their papers. I even saw some of them join other students at a pub, taking the advantage of their extended deadline.

Many Japanese students here have
been struggling with lectures and assignments because of the language barriers.
I myself had to spend extra hours in the library to read academic literature
for classes and assessment and refrain myself from going out until April 30th.
But as far as I know, all Japanese students managed to hand in their
assignments by the deadline. I know some of us were having health issues along
the way, but we did it on time. Some may fail while others may pass or even get
distinction. I wonder if this has got anything to do with “being Japanese”, but
I began to appreciate education that I received in Japan.
So, on May 3rd, End Year
Ball for Peace Studies took place in a hotel in Bradford. Though I was predicting
that an awful dinner would be served at the Ball, it was delicious! Honestly, I
was so surprised! ….or having stayed in a country known for fish & chips too
long, my standard for quality food might have been affected. Anyway, the menu
was: lamb meat balls with herbs in tomato sauce, salmon & shrimp with
potatos in white sauce, salad, rice/bread/fried potatos, and lemon cheese cake!
