“Research trip to Juba via Cairo”

Location: Cairo International Airport, Cairo, Egypt

Assalamu malaykum from Egypt, the country of the pyramids and the Arab Spring.

I landed in Egypt at 04:15 A.M. Now it is past 06:00 and am sleepy…. waiting for my connecting flight to Juba, South Sudan, the final destination of this trip!

I decided to go to South Sudan as part of my dissertation research. I am writing a dissertation on how the international policing can combat sexual and gender-based violence in post-conflict settings and I chose South Sudan as my case study.

Ho ho ho, did you just say that “oh such a random choice of holiday destination like she always does!”!???! Not really - I did research when deciding on where to go. I took into consideration security situation, the number of female police officers in the United Nations missions, and accessibility in terms of visa requirement, etc. Not so random this time!

Anyway, I haven’t made it yet to Juba, but I am already experiencing lots of interesting things.

First, it started the moment I sat on my seat in an Egypt Air aircraft. I just felt *something* wasn’t exactly the same as other airlines that I have taken before. It took me a while to notice it but it was the gender balance of cabin crews.

The only Arab airline I have chosen before the Egypt Air was FlyDubai, a budget airline for short distances from Dubai. I used to take it whenever I was going on leave from Kabul. Their cabin crews were from Russia, Slovakia, Poland, India, Bangladesh, China, the Philippines etc and the majority was women. So, it was my first time to sit in an airplane with lots of male cabin crews who were NOT so helpful.

There was a fat old lady with her husband, presumably an Egyptian couple, with MANY bags in front of me when passengers were looking for their seats. And every time they tried to make their way forward to their seats, this old couple got stuck. A male cabin crew saw them struggling and did nothing but just staring at them. I wanted to offer a hand to them but I had many bags myself so I couldn’t. And people behind me started to sign and/or whisper stuff like “oh man…. old people…”.

When I finally found my seat, I thought for a few seconds that I had underestimated the Egypt Air just because there was an USB socket and a touch-screen panel for each passenger and there was the inflight Internet service. But of course, my excitement was quickly replaced with disappointment as always. There was no POWER socket. Then the toilet which smelled as bad as a public toilet in a park or stg. And then the meal, which I couldn’t even figure out what it was made of. To finish off, their cup for hot drinks were those white plastic ones you can find at supermarkets for picnic! Very nice huh?

But there was one good thing as well – the full moon was shining in the sky. It was so beautiful. It made me feel happy.

I am so tired already because of the lack of sleep but as soon as I get to Juba, I am supposed to greet an officer from the United Nations Police division at the airport, which means I will be dead by the time I sleep in a hotel in Juba tonight. But I am so excited about this research trip in South Sudan, the first African country I visit in my life!

“カイロ経由のジュバでの実地調査”

場所：カイロ国際空港、カイロ、エジプト

ピラミッドの国、エジプトからアサラーム　マレイクム！

エジプトに午前４時１５分に着いた。今６時を過ぎたくらいで、かなり眠い。。。今回の旅の最終目的地である、南スーダンのジュバに行くフライトを待ってるとこ。

今回は、修論のための調査のために南スーダンに行くことにした。修論は、国際警察部隊が紛争後の社会においてジェンダー問題（"Sexual and Gender-based Violence” を日本語でなんて訳したらいいかわからん。。。）にどのような貢献が出来るかについて書いてる。んで、南スーダンを選んだ。

今「いつも通りなんてランダムな選択！」って言った！？？！実はそうでもない！どこに行こうか考えてるときに、ちょっとしたリサーチをして決めたってば。笑　例えば、治安、国連のミッションに所属する女性警官の数、そして査証の取りやすさとか。だから、そんなにランダムでもない。

んで、まだジュバにはついてないのに、すでにいろいろ興味深いことを目撃した。

まず第一に、エジプト航空の飛行機に入った瞬間から始まった。なんかが今まで乗ってきた航空会社と違うと思った。気づくのにちょっと時間がかかったんだけど、キャビン・アテンダントの男女比だった。

エジプト航空前に載ったことがあるアラブに本拠を置く航空会社は、FlyDubai だけ。FlyDubai はドバイからの近距離を専門とした格安航空会社。私がカブールから休暇に出るときにいつも使ってた。FlyDubai のキャビンクルーは、ロシア、スロバキア、ポーランド、インド、バングラデッシユ、中国、フィリピンなどなどの国の人たちを雇ってて、多くは女性。だから、今回が男性キャビンクルーいっぱいの飛行機に座ったのが初めてだった。しかも、その男性キャビンクルーの不親切なこと！

搭乗客がそれぞれの席を探しているときに、私の前に、おそらくエジプト人であろうと太ったおばさんと、その旦那さんらしき男性がいた。二人ともかなり荷物を持ってたから、前に進むたびに通路で席にひっかかったりしてたの。んで、ある男性キャビンクルーは、彼らがかなり苦労しているのを見て、何もせずに、ただじっと見てるだけ。助けてあげたかったんだけど、なにせ自分も荷物がかなりあって、出来なかった。んで、私の後ろにいる人たちが、ため息をついたり、“マジかよ。。。これだから、年よりは。。。”って言い始める。

やっとのことで自分の席を見つけると、一瞬私はエジプト航空をみくびってたと思った。その理由は、ただ単に USB のさし口とか、タッチスクリーンパネルの画面とかがそれぞれの席についてたり、飛行中にインターネットを使えたから。でも、私の興奮も、すぐに残念なことにいつも通り変わってしまう。電源用のソケットがない。その次は、トイレ。公園の公衆便所かっていうくらいくさい。お次は食事。何で出来てるかわからない不思議な食べ物だった。んでとどめは、スーパーとかで見かけるピクニック用の白いプラスチックのコップにつがれる熱い飲み物。すてきすぎ。。。

でも、そんな時でも一つだけいいことを見つけた。すっごいキレイな満月が飛行機の窓からずっと見えてたの。ちょっと幸せになれた。

寝てないから、すでに疲れてるけど、ジュバの空港についたらすぐに国連ミッションの警察の人にあいさつをしに行く予定。つまり、今夜ジュバのホテルのベッドで寝付くころには、死亡してるってこと。でも、初のアフリカの国、南スーダンでの今回の実地調査、かなり楽しみ！
